Beta Readers

A beta reader is a test reader of an unreleased work of literature or other writing (similar to beta testing in software), who gives feedback from the point of view of an average reader to the author. A beta reader is not a professional, so that the opinion of an average reader can be heard. Usually, a beta reader will be unpaid. The feedback is used by the writer to fix remaining issues with plot, pacing, and consistency. The beta reader also serves as a sounding board to see if the book has had the intended emotional impact.” —Wikipedia

I often need beta readers for projects and it can be a lot of fun to see a book before it gets published and share your feedback, good and bad. I recommend author-clients name beta readers in the Acknowledgements of their books, but all final decisions on their books are theirs, of course. A special pre-publication copy of a client’s book is created once the author-client and I are satisfied with a draft. Beta readers are the next stage. And it’s easy. As a beta reader you’re asked to share:

  • what you liked,
  • what you didn’t like,
  • thoughts on the clarity or confusion in a chapter or book,
  • thoughts on the flow of the book, both how smooth a read it was and how well organized it seems,
  • any praise or review you’d like to share which the author can use in marketing,
  • and anything else that strikes you.

Like Amazon and other platform reviews, your feedback should be honest and useful. I try to collect your feedback and present it to the authors so as an advance reviewer you can be as candid as you wish. My email address for feedback of electronic versions of books is provided in the actual copy. Drafts are always available as readable PDFs, and sometimes in print by mail if you prefer. The available formats of a “galley” (an advance review copy of a book, also called an “ARC”) will be listed on the book’s beta page, and those links will appear below. Each beta page is accessible by a password that expires according to the timeframe for each beta reader period of a project.

One way to always know about beta reader opportunities is of course to sign up for my email updates below, in the footer of each page of this website. Beta readers play an important role in the creation of a professional-quality book, and your beta reading is deeply appreciated, by both me and the author, so in advance, THANK YOU!
